I don't think that my youthful yet elegant mother wants to wear a muu muu down the aisle. But I also don't think she wants to wear a strapless ball gown. HELP!

Great question! I have been struggling with this, as well, because it seems that the dresses go directly from bridesmaid to old maid. There seems to be no in-between, in particular from the bridal shops that offer MOB dresses.

For my daughter's upcoming wedding, I will be shopping at my local malls, probably around New Year's...Fortunately, she's doing a black & white event, so it shouldn't be too much trouble to find a "little black dress".

I might suggest that you & your mother do some similar shopping...keep in mind that if you have time, there's not only New Year's Eve, but also prom season, and even perhaps Valentine's Day. Many of the stores should have lots of options for these events.

I think this is just a matter of shopping in a few well chosen stores.
The MOB (Mother of Bride) should wear something dignified, but with some pizazz, while obviously not attracting attention away from the Bride. MOBs wear blue a lot, Ive noticed, and I don't know why... I say, personally, skip the huge ostentatious corsage as well, and skip the Dyed-to-Match shoes too.

Something dressy and classy that looks good on her that's neither white nor black.

Don't go with what the bridal shops tell you she needs to wear -- they just want to take your money (and don't care if she looks silly or feels uncomfortable or wrong).

Just a nice, tasteful, classy dress - they should be able to help out at dress shops. Something sparkly.

I would go with a nice skirt suit, they're usually flattering on any figure. I'm 45.

I'd suggest something really pretty in a style that favors her body type, yet comfy and in a color that complements her.
