Dogs are puppies, technically, till they're two years old. Fixing him will help in the long run; but he's still likely to be a bit rambuncious for a little while. Take him somewhere where he can run daily. Let him wear himself out. That may help. Also check into some obedience classes. They may help more than fixing him will, actually (but fixing him is still a good thing to do).

It calmed my Lab down a little bit but nothing amazing. The only thing that helped him was lots of exercise, training and some time. He is now a year and a half but is the greatest dog ever. He has his moments but nothing like when he was a baby. The more time I spend with him the better he gets.

Make sure you are giving him as much excersise as possible. Take him for two walks a day for AT LEAST a half hour each. Play fetch in the yard or a room that is not very special (not the expensive item filled dining or living room for example). Also, if you have the time, read up on the subject. Ask your local library if they have any books on labs. I have one myself (yellow lab) and as a puppy she already has LOTS of energy. Also, if you want to, you can put you dog on a treadmill (if you have one). At first, stay with him and put a treat in front of him so he runs towards it. Start at a low speed and work your way up. Be VERY CAREFUL! After a few weeks, he will be able to do it on his own, while you work, or watch TV in the same room. Remember not to completely substitute treadmill walking for outdoor walking. Your doggie still needs fresh air!

You can try to get him fixed as a solution. If he is still a pup then he will be a little rowdy. And may I suggest dog obedience. That is what my dad did for his Lab and it worked wonders. He got rewarded for the calm and obedient actions there for learning the other actions were wrong. Dogs are very smart if they are taught how to behave.

Labs have high energy, so I'm not sure fixing him will help. I have a sheltie and was told that if we got her fixed, she would calm down. I have to say, the only thing that calmed her down is old age (she's 14 now)...I think you just have to wait it out.

Have you tried making sure he gets enough exercise?

you may find a energetic family that has time for a sporting- energetic dog - to take him. He needs to run and play (at this time and always) if your dog is a pup- getting him fixed is a good idea, if you dont want puppies later. I say that dogs will stay youthfull longer, if you fix them.
Find a dog that is more suited for your family if you must have a pet. try a timid shy mellow breed- so you may have to do your homework. good luck.

This answer is MAYBE! My lab was 5 when we had him fixed and him mellowed a little. He is still bouncy but takes longer naps.... maybe that is because he is getting older. I think it really only affects their personality before they hit puberty.

as the daughter of a vet its my place to say that when you get a dog fixed he will calm down MOST OF THE TIME! if you dog is older than 1 year (in human years) then i strongly urge you not to get him fixed!
