We got a dog from a friend and he had lost hair above his tail and on his back some from stress of being around another male dog. Now he has hair there but he still has dry skin in some places. We feed him dog food that is suppose to help with his skin and coat but he still has it. Does anyone know what else I can do to make this better. He is a German shepherd but he stays in the house a lot so I can't use oil or anything like that.

Add a vitamin E capsule to his food!!!!!This helps with dry skin and improves the health of the coat

Try using oil capsules that you can put in his food. Vitamin E is great as well as some fish oils. I feed my dogs a 1/2 a can of cod or salmon once a week to help with their coat. Be careful about bathing since that can dry their skin out too, especially if you have hard water. Oatmeal sprays are good too, like the one already mentioned that you can purchase from a pet supply store. Also consider using a vitamin supplement to help support a healthy coat and boost the dogs ability to recover from this dry skin episode. Look for a multivitamin with B and C vitamins in it. The B vitamins are great for stress! Vitamin C is a great antioxident. Check out VitaTabs at the local pet supply store and good luck!!

P.S. Whenever you are looking to fix a current condition also consider the long term in preventing it from happening again hence the vitamins. :) Just a tip.

I've always given my dogs salmon oil capsules - it's great for skin and coats. As well, because the air is so dry in the winter, they also get about 1 tablespoon of canola oil on their food daily. You need to treat him from the inside, won't help to put oil on the dog's coat from the outside.

Whereas the dog may have lost his hair from stress, dry skin is usually genetic and some breeds are particularly prone to it. There are products to treat it symptomatically with marginal success; but I dont know of anything that will completely cure/ solve the problem.

I'd check w/ your vet. Could be an infection from the pound, or stress-related "hot spots." If a dog is properly hydrated they rarely get "just" dry skin.

Try an oatmeal all natural lotion that you rub in and try putting raw oatmeal in his food. Try not to give him a bath for a while if it doesn't clear up I would talk to a vet. Don't use anything with alcohol in it though, it will just make it worse.

Have you tried a conditioner? I have two greyhounds and use horse shampoo & conditioner on them to help with the dry skin, plus it makes their hair nice and soft.
