Salem is most famously a town in Massachusetts where the witch trials took place in 1692, and many people were hung as accused witches who didn't confess and name other people to take their place. Arthur Miller's play "The Crucible" is based on it.

I only know two proper names spelled like that, one is a place in New England, where the famous witch trials were held,
the other is a very exclusive boarding school in either Germany or Switzerland, where very rich kids get their education. Prince Charles was educated there.
Apart from that there is "salem" as part of names, like "Jerusalem"
where it is a semitic word meaning "peace".

It's a city in MA as well as a city in Oregon. Also, interesting little fact, it's the root of the word "Jerusalem". If you look in Genesis 14:18 it says that Melchizedek was the king of Salem, that's Jerusalem.

There be witches south and witches east. We go forth to purify all in the name of...come hither...come closer...
Salem is know for the masscre of countless people through witch hunts in the 1600s throughout East Anglia and other parts.
Today's equivalent would be the religion of Wicca as proof. Such are the mobs who persecute asylum seekers, travellers and pædophiles as modern heirs to old ideals.

It's a common city name, after the Bible most likely.
Take the name "Jerusalem." In Hebrew, it's Yerushalayim. But in English it becomes Jerusalem. The "salem" part means "peace." It is related to shalom, and salaam, Hebrew and Arabic words for peace, respectively.
