I have a sure fire cure for this , my grandfather turned me on to this. Take a small amount of ammonia in a Dixie cup when the dog knocks over the trash the ammonia will spill and the aroma is very unappealing give it a try . Good Luck.

Yeah, 10 hours alone and bored will have dogs inventing stuff to do. That's a LONG time.
They are quick too, aren't they? You must have left something yummy in the can. Or, because it's never been an issue, she may not realize that you don't want her in the trash. Try a few sharp "NO's" whenever she shows any interest in the trash.
Get a lid for the can. One that locks down.
Put the can on the counter when you leave or in a cabinet with a baby proof latch.
There are sound deterents that will make a sound that dogs hate and keep her away from the can. There are ones that shock dogs too. These will work when you aren't home.
Get toys that dispense food as the dog plays with them. Get a few for interest and rotate them so she doesn't get bored. More than one toy will ensure that the food lasts all day. Putting her food in the toys is better than treats (junk food). Also, don't feed her anymore food. Use her usual "ration" as a measure of how much food she gets in a day, whatever doesn't fit into the toys, gets put in a bowl.
Really, I think you should look into a petsitter (or family member, friend or neighbor) that will come and take her for a walk during the day. Yes, they do exist. 10 hours is such a long time to be alone.
Hope this helps.

Put the trash in a can she can't get into.
Spend more time with her. Dogs are very much pack animals. In nature the pack doesn't go away and leave one dog alone for 10 hours. It's got to be very upsetting for her.
Can you....
- have a family member visit her?
- pay a trustworthy neighborhood teen to go walk her? (do you really make her wait 10 hours between bathroom visits??)
- vist her on your lunch hour
- put in a doggy door so she can go outside into a fenced yard
If all else fails, seriously think about placing her in a new home. If you work 10 hours a day, sleep 8 hours, and are probably busy in the rest of your time doing housework and other things, she's not getting much attention. Maybe get a pet more suited to your work schedule such as a cat or fish?

Get her a kong, stuff it with bits of hot dog, cheese, yogurt and other mushy stuff and freeze it before giving it to her. That will help keep her busy.
Put the trash out before you leave every time!!!!! The temptation for many dogs is just to great....they are opportunists and will seize the opportunity to find some yummies in our trash cans!!!
If you can't watch her, crate train her. I have a lot of info on crate training if you need help, just email me at libertydogtraining@yahoo.com

Digging in the trash is what dogs do!
Put your trash containers where puppy can't get at them.
Get a few more toys and some chewy things.
Can you make a place where puppy can look out a window?
A bored dog is a bad dog.

If you can, put it in a cabinet and put a baby lock on it. You can crate the dog or keep it somewhere behind a baby gate (which is better if you are away long hours) or put the trash on a table or counter when you leave.

I had the same problem with my dog. We tried putting it under the sink (in a cabinet) but he got into that and actually ruined the door. After that we put it on the counter and that worked pretty well most of the time except for the fact that it is kind of gross.

the trash can has always been a dogs favorite amusement park. just put the trash out of reach when you are unable to watch your dog.

Our dog did this and we got a lid for it first and then we put a mouse trap in it. Did the trick. The lid helps a lot even now, they like to smell it.

You'll have to get one of those trash cans the dog can't get into. Once they get the "taste" for causing you that much grief, it's almost impossible to get them to stop!
