For a long time now - 3 months - I've been trying to send a thank-you letter to my local Police Department. I've almost finished drawing the patrol car (looks perfect) and I'm proud of that. A little more when I'll laminate it :) I even wrote a complimentary letter along with that.

However, someone suggested I add flowers. I'm a tad bit concerned as I have not a brief idea if this is essential. I'm 16 and this means a lot to me.

Ever since I was a kid I've listened to the Officers who came to my school. And unlike others I know, I actually tried my best to do what they said "No drugs, no smoking, stay safe, expand your education level, volunteer around the community."

And I've wanted to make them proud. The Police and my Hero (a Paramedic) taught me much more then they will ever know.

I'm wondering if I should also take flowers with the letter and drawing...

People around me have a knack to give countless opinions that get me thinking.

By far this is an annoying question but I really respect them. When I help people or donate money it isn't for them but because of them. And the best appreciation I can probably show is what I give each day, which is praying for them.

Please don't bother adding negative words to your answer, I know, where I live they are excellent in policing and have proven so because they make me feel safe.

Thank you. - Maryam

Mysticjava: You're right in two ways.
1: The only way they may know me is for the autographs I ask for. I’ve asked for a grand total of seven times. Considering they barely stand at one place.

2: I remotely have a clue of how to make cookies and would never buy them for an Officer at gunpoint (probably coffee but never cookies)

Thanks.

You sound like a really respectful and thoughtful young lady. Stay on the right path. Since you are wondering about sending flowers, how about making some type of home made snack to go with your card instead of flowers. We all know how Officers hardly have the time to have a decent snack with the hours they keep.

I think a simple letter would be fine. If you can name specific people in the letter than even better. Those letters get placed in an offices employment file and can be useful for promotions and what not. Flowers are fine, but anything eatable is a definite no-no. You're probably a sweet girl but the officers are not going to know that. Even people who don't work in law enforcement have a hard time eating food from a stranger. Just keep it simple. Sometimes simple is best. Good initiative!

No it isn't essential, but if you still want to you may as well. They will appreciate the drawing a lot. Most people don't take the time to thank or officers, so the very fact that someone older than 8 years old is thanking them will probably amaze them and inspire them them to keep up the good work.

Maryam:

Any type of appreciation is appreciated by Police Officers. In this day few people realize that they are doing the best job they can do. I think that a letter and drawing is more than they normally get....so don't worry about the flowers. But remember you have to go by what YOU FEEL IS OK. It's coming from you and not everyone else, so go with your gut!!!

Stay on the "right" road and live your life the way you want.

You just take that down there how you want to with your own thoughts. If someone else want to give flowers tell them to bring them. They will probably frame and hang your picture up for all to see somewhere down there at the station. good job. And you do what you feel like in your heart. no more , no less. Im sure your efforts will be rewarded.

I wish all people had the respect you obviously have for our public servicemen. They are there to serve and protect and like our troops they put there lives on the line for our rights. Even though I've been arrested by the police I know it was my own fault and they were just doing their job. All citizens should show honor and respect to the police, firefighters, paramedics etc,, in this and all countries.

Wow! You are incredibly thoughtful! I'm sure that the card and the letter will be just fine, you don't have to add flowers.
I work as a paramedic, and I've found that it's pretty rare to be thanked by anyone. I'm sure that your card and letter will be greatly appreciated.
Hope you have a great day!

Be careful about cookies unless they all know you really well. While it's obvious that you care, they deal with a bunch of people who would have no problem hurting them. To be on the safe side, they might not eat something homemade....

That is so sweet. Anything that you do with make them happy. Police get such a bad rap and they have to deal with so much that letting them know that 1 person really appreciates them will just make their day. You do what-ever it is that help you express how you feel.

That's really nice!

I wonder about cookies or something instead of flowers?
