I have yet to meet a Jew who takes the Genesis account of creation as historical fact. They will generally point to it being a metaphor for understanding God and creation but never a literal fact.

What is lost if one chooses to see the Genesis stories as divine truths but not facts?

I am a Catholic.I absolutely do not accept the Genesis story as a fact.I think it is more just a symbolic thing ,and must be looked at rationally and metaphorically.Rather than being taken literally. A lot of it reflects the way of thinking of the time period in which it was written.

If humanity did not "fall" into a state of sin as described in Genesis, then Christ's death on the cross to atone for the sins of humanity accomplished nothing. It would have been unnecessary and irrelevant. The redemption of mankind accomplished once and for all on the cross cannot be separated from the historical account of mankind's rebellion described in Genesis, a result of Adam's (mankind's) desire to be in control; to be our own gods.

I see Genesis as divine truth, but not historical fact.

God created the world. it says that very clearly in the Bible. all you have to do is read Genesis and then you'll know the truth.

do you think God put the Bible here for no good reason?

Fundie Christians would rather wallow in the mindless belief of literal interpretation because that way they don't have to think - remember, the thing fundies are most afraid of is the consequence of rational thought.

It is considered by conservatives the top of a slippery slope towards secularism.

Truth must be predicated upon facts or it's not truth. Show me one "truth" based upon fabricated facts and I will show you that it cannot be a truth.
