Prednisone has many long term side effects if taken for a long time but taking them for a short time should not be dangerous for you or your child. Many Rheumatologists (arthritis specialists) routinely prescribe this drug for their pregnant and nursing patients because it is the only "safe" anti-inflammatory drug, if taken short term, that slows or stops inflammation in any significant way.
If you have doubts however, see another doctor or talk to your pharmacist.
You should not be taking anything at all until you are comfortable that you have all the information regarding side effects or any potential problems that could damage your child. I would certainly recommend that you not take information from strangers (like me) on the Internet when it comes to the safety of you and your child. Congratulations on your new little one and good luck.

I don't see a connection. If the mother is taking the steriods, as long as the mother is not breastfeeding the infant will never ingest the drug. And, even if the child did ingest a small amount steriods, it wouldn't hurt the child. Why? Because with babies born prematurely doctors usually administer steriods to hasten the development of the baby's lungs. The greatest concern is that the mother has impetigo and if you are describing it correctly the impetigo was caused by a virus - a herpes virus. In this situation, I recommend that the mother does not nurse the baby until the infection is resolved. If at all possible, the mother should avoid contact with the baby.

It sounds like a reasonable prescription . A doctor would judge the risk of prescribing medication to a mother who just gave birth against the good effect to her health.
Get a second opinion from another doctor with your concerns. Or a good nurse. Dont breastfeed the baby if you are not sure.
