Cottage pie is a variation on shepherds' pie that is based on minced (ground) beef rather than lamb or mutton.

Cottage pies are often available in Australia as a standard meat pie manufactured with a layer of mashed potato rather than a top crust.

Shepherd's pie is a traditional British dish that consists of a bottom layer of minced (ground) lamb in gravy covered with mashed potato and (often) a layer of cheese. It is a favourite dish of institutional cooks keen on feeding large groups of people.
