Doctor of chiropractic. It's a completely different educational pathway than a medical doctor, similar for a dentist. You finish college then do 4-years at a specialized school. I've had back problems and found them to be beneficial. Many people find chiropractors to be "quacks", but I think they are good at what they do. Some of the quick movements can cause damage to blood vessels and other tissue, however. They do not screen for this very well.

Aside from this, your other option is an orthopedic surgeon (an M.D.). They also take care of people with back pain, but mostly those with serious conditions like ruptured disks, broken vertebrae, etc. The use pain medications and surgery for treatment, although they can also prescribe exercises or physical therapy for relief. For simple chronic low back pain, I would stick with a chiropractor.

"Back doctor" is a layman's term that has no specific meaning. It could mean a chiropractor who is trained in spinal manipulation and other measures to put your bones in their proper position. It could mean an orthopedic doctor who is trained in how to do surgery to correct problems such as a herniated disc. It could simply mean a primary care provider such as a family practice or internal medicine doctor who can provide a prescription for pain relief and referral for physical therapy, massage therapy or chiropractor or ortho doc.
