I have a 31/2 year old and I want to start putting him in preschool. Is this a good age to start?

My daughter started at 3 1/2 for 2 days a week 3 hours a day. She loved it.

I am a former pre-school teacher. I've worked in daycares with children as young as 6 weeks enrolled.

Personally any time after 18mos is good. They learn so much, but once your child turns three they need the social interaction with other kids their age. They also need to learn that they can trust other adults besides mommy, daddy, & grandma.

My daughter is also 3 1/2 but I am waiting until next fall to start her in a preschool. The main reasons are because she still isn't potty trained, and we feel like we can't really afford it. But I personally think one year of preschool before starting Kindergarten is enough. Although she has a friend the same age as her who started going (2 hours a day 3 times a week) this last month. I think the decision is up to you, if you feel your child is ready and you can afford it, then go for it. There are many children in my community that start preschool at 3, but it's less structured for the younger ones and more like a daycare until they are 4.

My son is starting preschool next week. He'll be three on the 23rd of October. I think 3 1/2 would be a great age to start. It gives them time with other kids and you a break at home.

It really depends on your child. In my case our 3 yo wouldn't talk. Her older sister did all of it for her. Within a week of preschool she was talking on her own. No, it wasn't clear speech but it didn't take long for us to wonder why we really wanted her speak in the first place! Some send their children to preschool to help get them socially ready for kindergarten. The preschool we have here is a part of our school system. This way we know our children are ready for what lies ahead. This makes for a much smoother transition from a "play" setting to an "educational" setting. Most of the children, when they enter kindergarten are already reading simple books, counting and doing beginning math skills. Check out your local preschools, talk to some parents of preschoolers and get their ideas on which ones are good and which aren't. Make your decision on your childs needs. Good luck and God Bless

My son just started a few weeks ago and he turned 4 in July. We have elected not to send him to Kindergarten until he is 6 so he will go to preschool when he is 5 also.

Where I live it's age 3 (if they turn 3 before May I believe) AND they must be potty trained. They can be 6 years old but if they aren't potty trained they will kick them out. For all those people answering 4, 5 and 6... you are thinking Kindergarten. Preschool comes before Kindergarten to prepare them for it.

Just in my opinion I would say to find somewhere that they don't require the school like atmosphere because why would you want your child to have to sit in a classroom at such a young age. Let them learn on there own. I would say to start preschool at age 4. Let him learn on his own for a while longer.
