A third scan at 33 weeks could be for a number of reasons. To check the site of the placenta if it was found to be low lying on an earlier scan; to check growth of the baby if your midwife is concerned or if you have any conditions of pregnancy such as high blood pressure or gestational diabetes; if you have had a previous small baby or if there was some suspected problem with the baby on an earlier scan. Some babies have things such as cysts or potential kidney problems in early pregnancy which often resolve as the pregnancy continues. In my experience the majority of scans performed in the U.K at this gestation are for placental site or foetal growth. Ask why it's being done at the time, this is your body and your baby and I'm surprised no-one has told you already.

It is very important to go for a 3rd scan at 33 weeks because of the presentation position of the baby, position of the placenta and also malformation that was not develop during the early stage of the pregnacy and also the well-being of the child .

I had a 3rd scan at 33 weeks yesterday. At my last visit when he told me we'd do another ultrasound at the upcoming visit (the one I had yesterday) I asked if we were looking for anything in particular or just looking. He said he was not looking for anything in particular per se, didn't I want to look. He has started farming out the 22 week ultrasound to an ultrasound technician that does nothing but ultrasounds all day long so he can spend more time with his patients at each visit. I wondered if he wanted to keep his ultrasound skills up to date or if it was because I as now 30 or if it was because he just had more time now to do superfluous scans. At the visit I got the impression that it was also to see if the baby had turned yet or if it was breech....and if it had been breech he would do another one later in the pregnancy.

At a 36 week scan they found out my daughter had pylecstasis. A condition of the kidney and ureter. If I wouldn't have went they may not have known until it was to late and she needed a kidney transplant.

Usually, just to check the baby is growing properly, probably nothing to worry about. Better safe than sorry as the saying goes!! Good luck

sometimes it is necessary to have a dating scan to make sure that the baby is the right size for your dates, but if you are worried or unsure speak to your mudwife or gp and ask for an explanation

Good luck x
