the beholder is the individual beholding the beauty in question.
Some person find one piece of artwork beautiful, some may not, it's in the 'eye of the beholder'.

As much as I like my buddy 'the old dog', I must disagree. While personal taste is indeed individual, it is not 'beauty' that you learn in schools, but aesthetics. There is a major difference. Aesthetics are a certain set of criteria that apply to a given art medium. And it is the application of these criteria that results in beauty, or a lack thereof. As for the eye of the beholder, I think that its not so much that beauty resides in the eye, but the appreciation of it.

Beauty is in the Eyes of the Beholder means that all of us see things differently.
Our brains takes in and processes infromation differently and because of that we see things in ways that other people may not be able to.
Hence the reason why, what you deem as being beautiful may very well be ugly to someone else.

it means that each and every person has a different view on what is beautiful, you may like fat men, thin women, orientals, white, black, big breasts, blond hair, muscles or hairy chests, that is your view so you choose what you feel is beautiful, someone will always disagree with your choice, but it is your choice so beauty really is in the eye of the beholder(you being the beholder)

lets say you have a little pug dog.

i find it ugly.

you find it beautiful.

the beauty does not actually exist. there is no textbook way to prove or determine that this dog is beautiful. the beauty actually only exists in your eyes, and you are beholding this dog.

therefore, the beauty is in the eye of the beholder of the object in question.

Basically it means that we all see things differently. I may look at something or someone and think that it is beautiful, but the person standing next to me may not. I also think that when it comes to people, the more you know about that person can make them more attractive or unattractive.

if you think its beautiful then it is.
others may not think so but that is why in quote
"beauty is in the eye of the beholder" not "beauty is in the eye of the other person next to you"

It means that everyone sees things differently. What is repulsive to one person may be beautiful to another. Did you see the movie Shreik?
