Why doe'sant someone do a programme comparing the difference in attitude and care of our elderly with the rest of Europe. Would we come out good, or would we be ashamed of the result. I don't think we would fare well at all.

Yes, we seem to be the worst offender.

It's as if we've adopted an attitude of treating youths and immigrants with more respect than they truly deserve at the expense of our old folk - those who saved us from tyranny and fascism. It's about time the old folk of Britain stood up and forced the issue a bit - but then again they are not the type to moan, unlike the youths and immigrants of today.

I shall need to disagree with you. I remember that a few years ago their was a heat wave across Europe. I think 2003. Anyway in France, Spain and Italy throughout August many tens of thousands of elderly people died from the heat, but what was most awful was that many of them remained in their flats, houses and no one knew that they were dead until their family returned from their summer holiday.
This caused such an outcry that the French president asked the the country to give up one bank holiday to help pay for elderly care. The people refused and continue to take a bank holiday even though officially there is no bank holiday.
In conclusion each country has excellent points and bad points when it comes to Care for the Elderly and you cannot compare two countries which have a totally different social history towards the elderly.

Britain may not be perfect in its care for the elderly, but that does not mean people should just moan about it. Have you thought about becoming a volenteer in an old persons home. You would then be providing your ideal standard of care but you will also see other people providing a very high level of care too.

I have travelled quite a bit around the world and particularly in Europe, and I have to agree with you, Britain is the worst country for the way the elderly are abused and disrespected.

Not all cultures within Britain disrespect the elderly but I think that there is a general feeling of dis-interest in our elderly.

I think they need more respect, so I'd be happy for someone to do a documentary about it - whether it showed a negative or positive side to our attitude.

It would be an education for all.

i disagree

when young people work our buts of and pay huge tax permiums so that they can have a pension... by the time we are of pension age the money that the government has been taking from us wont go to us, it will have all been used up.

there used to be 4 young ppl to every OAP
now there are two young ppl to 4 OAP

Its unfair that we have to work so hard to support them and we get nothing in return from the government... im not saying its their fault im mearly offering an explinationas to why some younger ppl may be rude to the elderly

i am not one of them

I agree - it's about time families started to treat their older members with respect. Similarly hospitals and nursing home need to be aware that we will all age.
