Nope. Parents are quick to buy minivans and suvs, even when they only have 1 kid. My little Preston is just fine in my little car.

I have a "gas guzzling 4x4" to take my 4 children to school and daycare. Last year I had a 4 door car and by the time we got 2 car seats, 2 backpacks, 4 kids, bulky coats, diaper bags, and any school projects packed in, we looked like a family that lived in their car. I'm serious, when the doors opened everything just fell out from being packed in. Why a 4x4? Because in the summer we take the darling 4 children camping alot and we have to pull a camper. We also do a lot of fishing and hunting, so the 4x4 is necessary in the back areas. The extra space also allows them to take friends so we don't have to take a second vehicle, using even more gas. Glad I could add insight into the necessity of a 4x4 for you. Thanks for the opportunity.

Have you ever thought there may be other reasons they have a "gas guzzling 4x4"?
I have an SUV/4x4 and I only have two children. But I also have two dogs whose combined weight is 200 pounds. I need the space. Believe me, I hate the gas guzzling, but I can't see my entire family(including dogs) fitting into a more gas efficient Celica or Neon when we go camping.

Not at all, but it is the parent's choice about what they drive their kids to school in.

Personally, we have a diesel truck that we'll probably be taking our kids to school in. That is, of course, until they're old enough to hold on while riding the back of the gas guzzling Harley!

I prefer not to be labeled a "soccer mom" when I am in my minivan!! I hate being stereotyped. I am a mother of 3 children and it wouldnt be easy to fit them into a small car. With car seats and all. I dont consider my van to be a gas guzzler. It gets pretty decent gas miliage. And as far as resale value, No, they arent as high as a Honda or a Nissan.. but they do have a decent resale value.

Not all 4x4s guzzle gas. . . we have an Explorer with a 6 cylinder. Many cars have 6 cylinder engines, and nobody calls THEM "gas gusslers!" My SUV is an EGO thing???? Well then, so is my neighbor's Kia sedan, it's a 6 cylinder too!

No, it is not just the school run, but any use around town. The freedom to use these gas guzzlers should be tempered by the danger they pose to others - pedestrians, cyclists, ordinary cars.

They should be more heavily taxed as this seems to be the only way people modify selfish behaviour

NO. Not at all. I only live a few blocks from an elementary school. SUV's are not only bad for the environment, but also the global political situation. If you can, just walk the kids to school.

well I guess if you have 6 kids and already owned a SUV then yes. I would not go buy a minnie van just for the price of gas. Most minnie vans have NO resale value. I would rather own a suv that I could eventually resale if I wanted to. (but that is my opinion.)

It is depends on how many children you have, and if you will be taking other children to sporting events and practices. Look on the market for station wagons and minivans. The gas mileage will be better.
