How many are your dependent including yourself. E.g. if you are single 1 or 0, if married 2 or less etc. The lower the number the more the fed gov. will withold from your paycheck. If you owe them money at the end of the year you will need to pay, if not you would get a return.

You can claim one exemption for every $2000 in deductions that you plan on having.

However, you can claim any number that you want. If you want a refund at the end of the year, claim less. If you want to pay at the end of the year, the claim more. But, don't claim to many or you could pay a penalty.
