Calico isn't a breed, it's a color pattern. But they are beautiful:) Your cat is a domestic long, medium, or short hair (depending on the length of hair). I have a DSH dilute calico and a DSH orange and white tiger.
I like all sorts of cats. I have a soft spot for "mutts" (both cat and dog)....
But I do have a few favorite breeds; Siamese, Snowshoe, Russian Blue, and Maine Coon....beautiful cats.

I have a calico...but calico is a type of colouring, its not a breed. I have a black tortie persian and a calico persian. Persians are by far my favourite breed, they're so loving and gentle and playful. Common cats can be adorable too, but you never quite know how their character will turn out, a friend of mine has a little one that she has nutured and loved and cuddled since it was 2 weeks old, while it is very sweet and lovable there is no way she will allow you to hold her in your arms quietly!
P.S Cats don't carry AIDs *sigh*. There is a type of feline immundeficiency syndrome but its not transmitted to humans, and AIDS is exclusively found in humans (HIV = HUMAN immunodeficiency virus) It may have started out through a mutation in a virus that was found exclusively in apes, but now its exclusively human. So please, let us not say stupid things.

I had a gray cat from the shelter - domestic shorthair. He was better than any "breed" I've seen. Loveable, cuddly, laid-back, really more like a dog than a cat! And he had the most luxurious thick coat - silvery in the sun... but not so long that it required a lot of grooming.
Sigh - he died of cancer last month. I miss him!
Shelter cats are the best, in my experience - none of the neurological disorders the inbreeding created in purebreds.

Red siamese. They are beautifull and highly intelligent, tough they are the most stubborn cats I ever had...And Iknow all cats are stubborn!!!
I also like the calico, they are sweet tempered and fun loving.
I also have a brown tabby, very affactionnate when she feels like it, tough independent at times.
I sometimes wonder if my red siamese has the power to make himself invisible...I mean he will hide in the oddest places, where no cats have gone before!!!

Firstly, to address the ignorance in rico2408's answer: Cats do not carry AIDS. There is, however a feline immune deficiency disease that is transmitted in the same ways as AIDS. It is *NOT* the same disease and humans cannot contract it! I prefer mixed breeds myself. If I had to choose a pedigree though, I'd go Skoggkatt or Maine Coon.

I personally like black, domestic shorthair (aka alley) cats. Of course, a nice siamese is good to have also. And calicos ARE beautiful. And Tabbies are so interesting to look at. And persians are so regal. And... oh heck. I just like cats. I own two blacks and a siamese! Or rather, they own me. (My siamese hooked a piece of chicken out of my salad last night and ate it right in front of me!)

Well, the generalized "breed" Domestic Shorthair/Medium hair/ Longhair is definately my favorite. This category is a nice way of saying your cat comes from undetermined heritage.
As far as pure-breed cats go, my favorites are:
Maine Coon
Norwegian Forest Cat
Egyptian Mau
As a back-up reminder to a post already commented on: There is no such thing as Feline AIDS. There is a virus SIMILAR to HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) in cats called FIV (feline immunodeficiency virus). Many people refer to it as Feline AIDS, because of it's similar characteristics and symptoms. It is not transferrable to humans, and HIV is not transferrable to felines/canines/etc. HIV is only transferrable from specific primates to homosapiens, and vise-versa.
