My daughter is in kindergarten and is getting phys.therapy. She doesnt need it they put her in it when she was in pre-k because they said she needed to work on gross and motor skills. I just trecently found out that the pt assist goes down the slide and swings with her on on her lap. Also they run their fingers up and down her back to get her to sit up straight and doesnt like it and i told her if anyone ever touches you or does anything to you that you are unfomfortable with tell them no. Well the pt still did it they tell her they do this stuff w/ her because its part of pt. I am mad because of what she told me and i told the school I want her out of pt. She is 5 she can go down a swing and slide by herself and they also pull her out at nap time to do this. I am no longer going to let them use her to get money. What would any of you parents do if this was happening to your child and she told them she or he were uncomfortable? Should I need a lawyer?

My first question is -have you had her evaluated by anyone outside the school system? Without knowing the details, it would be hard to know what is a justifiable part of her IEP(Individual Education Plan). As a parent, you have the right to remove your child from any special education program, but I caution you. Don't refuse free services unless you are certain they are not needed. Attend the meeting with an open mind. 99.9% of the time the school also wants what is best for your child. It is a little easier for them to be more objective. It's hard to be objective about your own child. Good luck.

I am some what confused. Are you concerned that they are touching her inappropriately?
I think the first thing I would do is contact another PT and ask if the methods they are using is normal? I wouldn't bad talk the PT you have, just say you were wondering and that your daughter is uncomfortable with this, and if this is the way it is handled, is there another way it can be done.
This day and age you can never be to careful, but is it possible that your daughter has issues with being touched at all? And Have you talked to the PT. I wouldn't leave this to a 5 year old, I would talk to the PT myself. What if this is what has to be done and it is the only way to do it, then you can help guide your daughter so that she may be more comfortable with all of this. I would hate to ruin someones reputation over misunderstanding, nor would I want your child or any ones child to be touched in a manner that is unacceptable.
Good Luck, and stay calm.

I'd first visit with the committee that decided she needed it and express your concerns. Have a meeting if necessary, not just a phone call. Unfortunately, if there is an IEP in place, they don't actually need the parent to agree with anything in it. They can say these things are necessary for her education. However, you can get your own evaluations done and bring the results in to them. If they still refuse to work with you then I'd get a lawyer. Meanwhile, if the issues are too uncomfortable for your daughter, get her the heck out of there. She doesn't need the torture on a daily basis, it would be extremely harmful for her. There are other schools, even though it might be harder to get her there.

I am a teacher and I teach kindergarten. Children who have poor gross motor skills at that age need extra help, but do not need to be touched, if you are against that. I would ask the principal of the child's school, if they can give your child physical therapy without touching her. If not, and you are against this, write a letter to the school and tell them you do not want your child in physical therapy any longer. If they do not remove her at once, go to the school board. If that doesn't help; yes, get a lawyer to write a letter to the school.

Have your daughter's motor skills improved? If you feel she is past the point of needing PT, then demand they stop. If she still needs to improve, then perhaps she needs a new PT assistant.

When I was a kid I had to take speech therapy and I hated it. I went home and cried to my parents every night about how it made the other kids make fun of me, and how it upset me. They probably understood that I didn't want to be the different kid in class, but they knew I needed the therapy.

Consider where your daughter is in her development and if you sincerely feel she would be okay without the therapy, then pull her out of it.

I don't think you need a lawyer. To many people assume lawyers are the fix all. If she is in PT this year you had to sign papers allowing her to be in the program. No schools put children in programs unless the parent has signed the forms. Just go to the Superintendents Office at the school and ask them to pull your childs paperwork from the program. Explain to him that you feel your child does not need this. As far as the touching your childs back~these people are trained to assist children and part of that involves touching. That is part of physical therapy. You are making it sound as though it is inappropriate behavior. Do yourself and your child and the therapy program at your school a favor and go to the Superintendents office and pull her out of the program.

I would go to the superintendant of schools with a written complaint. If that does no good then go to the school board. Tell them you want her removed from the PT. If they refuse then get a lawyer and write a letter to the editors in the newspaper and bring it to the attention of the public. They will have to do something then. Protect your child. That is the most important thing.

Why is it that schools think they are God? A school has its own set of rules and it is its own "government". If I were you I would go to the head of this school and express your concerns. YOU are the parent and YOU have the final say. Remind them of this. They think sometimes, that because they have your child under their care for a few hours that they have the right to take your place. Let them know that they DON'T have the right to take your place. Also, call the school board and speak with administration. Tell them that you are doing this. They might straighten up. Anyway, I would still call and speak to the head of the school board just to let them know what is going on. If that doesn't work, then call the state health and social service department. Threaten to call your local news channel, and local paper. Make yourself heard because if you don't, they will continue on as they are doing and ignore you. Good luck.

Definitely get her out of there. She doesn't need to be sitting on other adult's laps, and you can help her with her motor skills yourself. You should talk to the kindergarten teacher yourself and tell her you're uncomfortable with the way the pt assisant is touching your daughter ... that should wake her up. Tell her you want your daughter out of pt. If the kindergarten teacher doesn't help you promptly, go to the principal.

If they continue to do this send a registered letter with a return signature to the principal, and the school board stating your concerns and have a copy. Then if they still give her PT see a lawyer. Until you send the letter it is your word against theirs
