“To be wronged is nothing, unless you continue to remember it”
- Confucius -

I definately agree, we must forgive the ones who hurt us

If you disagree, please state why and back up your statement with logic, prefferably not circular. Thank You.

I think the word "remember" is not the most accurate translation, the chinese probably have a word for remember that has negative connotations...

Not perfect, just forgiven: It would be if Confucianism wasn't older than Christianity.

Blue2monday: The only naive one is the person who believes that the other side is naive.

“The gentleman calls attention to the good points in others; he does not call attention to their defects. The small man does just the reverse of this”

If my positive thinking is a defect to you than that is your opinion. Besides, I would expect a pessimist to think that.

True. no one can wrong you unless you allow it. if someone does something, and you dont feel wronged, then it is nothing

I don't think you understand this statement very well. It is saying that if you are wronged and you FORGET it then you weren't actually wronged. It is only if you remember that you were actually wronged.

Now, your saying "I definately agree, we must forgive the ones who hurt us". You confuse me. To forgive and to forget are two entirely different things! I can forgive someone but I won't forget what they did because then I would be an idiot. And they would have the pleasure of doing it to me again, and again, and again. Also, known as "If you are slapped, show the other cheek" which I think is a BS because your enemies will use that against you. So "NO" I don't agree with what you are saying.

On the flip side, if you read that statement again you will notice that it can be read in two ways. The one, is the way you have read it which shows what a positive (ahem... naive) person you are. The other way you could read this, is "If you want to wrong someone make sure they remember it, or else it won't work."

I'll try positive circular reasoning

I only recently recieved forgiveness from a person I wronged after they agreed to stop bringing it up and truly stop the behavior that continued to give them doubt I was sorry

abuse is something that must be addressed, where people who blindly forgive get taken in and "rolled" a lot

I want to live,
so I think of today
I want to move on,
so I think of tomorow
but accept forgiveness now
and make ammends soon
so I can live
because I want to enjoy today
so I can move on
and enjoy tomorow
so I give forgiveness carefully
and accept apologies respectfully
so WE can live
because I want to share today
so we can progress in our journey
and have a mutual hope of tomorow
and less reasons to forgive
and readily apologize
because I want to
live, NOW

I think the people who hurt others on purpose will get theirs in the long run. I also know that if I am extremely angry at someone, it makes me sick inside because I want to release that anger somehow. I have an in-law who has wronged me for 25 years. I stayed angry for a LOT of those years. NOW, I stay away from the poison that was destroying my soul --- and even though so many bad things happened --- I PERSONALLY WILL NOT ALLOW IT TO HAPPEN ANYMORE. I "let it go" -- I don't know that I'm ready to say the word "forgive" but then again.....I'm over it because it's not going to happen anymore. Does that make sense. We eat ourselves up with anger because of something someone else did to us. "DO NOT LET SOMEONE RENT SPACE IN YOUR BRAIN" ----- how's that for good advice? I know you aren't asking for any and it's just a question but.......just sharing.

I have no problem forgetting the wrongs done to me but, I can't forget the wrongs I've done. Does Confucius have anything to say about people who can't forgive themselves?

To be wronged is wrong... thats simple... weather you remember it or not it is still wrong. If you have truely been wronged it is nearly impossible for a normal person to really completely forget it. They may be able to move past it but they won't forget it. Many of Confucian sayings describe what it is to be super human not normal. That is not yet conversing on the degree of wronged here. If you step on my toe I will probably forget that by tomorrow. If you shoot my child I will never forget it.

I do not agree with using Confucius to establish any philosphy on which to base my opinion. I believe in Biblical truths. Forgiveness being one of these rules.

Yes..."to err is human, to forgive devine." Forgiveness is a very difficult thing to do, but it truly is the only way we can move forward.

YES, no, MaYbE...I don't know, I'm confused, help me!!

I forgive those who wronged me but as forgetting, thats another whole issue in it self. My husband committed adultery, how can one FORGET that. As a good Christian I forgave but never will I forget...

I disagree because it depends on the hurt you receive from that person since in the end you will be embarrased, ashamed and humiliated.

I think it is okay to remember (at least out of safety). But one must forgive.
