What brands would you recommend? I notice Sony doesn't have an offering in the way of separates, unless they don't advertise it much.

NAD and Outlaw are good offerings, Rotel and some other even more expensive brands are very good as well, but my choice for separates when considering pristine performance for music as well as home theater, I would recommend considering the Arcam DiVA or FMJ lines.

If you mean a separate receiver, separate DVD player, separate CD player and so then you really have alot of choice for under 5000. If you gave more info I could help you out. Were you being sarcastic or is you budget 5000? What size speakers (Inwall, towers, thin towers, small wall mountable) What kinda music/movies, who will be using it? size of the room? dedicated home theater/family room, spouses feelings?

NAD and Rotel are some good brands to look at for starters. Meridian used prepros (568) are an incredible value for what you get. For amps, used Bryston is about as good as it gets, with a transferrable 20-yr. warranty.

Outlaw Audio has some highly-rated components. Their top-shelf package (preamp and amp) runs at around $3000 and is apparently a steal for the price.

If you are looking at separates I would suggest that you also look at the following brands:

Emotiva from av123.com

AVM50 processor and MCA50 Amp from Anthem. (anthemav.com)

These two brands are awesome. I like the Anthem because it is upgradeable and the company keeps upgrading their processors with the latest technology and thus your invesment is better protected.

Check out my site - http://www.treblemaker.com/ - there are lots of good reviews for seperates.

Do you're research, go to stores, listen to different brands, and don't spend money on features you eaither don't need or will never use.
