Use the theme from the tattoo studio as a basis. That way it all blends together, and people know that both shops are affiliated. Have a door that connects the two salons. It will help to keep the clientele around the age range of people that are old enough to wander into both as they wait their turn for the stylist or artist. That way you won't have parents bring their little kids to your shops. If someone is waiting to get their hair done, and they wander into the tattoo parlor, they may decide to come back to the parlor, and vice verse.
You'll want to keep the lighting white and bright for accuracy on the hair, like if someone wants their hair dyed pink and you have funky lightening, then it may turn out sloppy.
Get a bright color(s) to paint the walls. Add some posters of the tattoo drawings on the walls in between posters of funky hairstyles. Now your advertising both businesses. Then add some chrome fixtures and accents, it's easy on upkeep and adds a modern look. Then get some floor tile that's easy to clean, but still adds something to the place more than plain hardwood. Maybe a black marble or granite to keep it modern without going overboard with the bright colors.
As unique as you may want, too vivid can be hard on your customers (and employees) to look at for long periods of time. They should be comfortable and relaxed in your shop, not developing a headache from an overload of neon's.
Good luck!

What a neat idea!! Are you wanting different ideas as far as decorating the salon or for offering different hair styles, colors and cuts? Since it will be attached to your tattoo studio, I'd use bright colors for the walls and furnishings...maybe a retro theme. You can always check eBay for retro decor or your local second hand shops and antique shops. There is a link below to an on line place that carries retro themed items. Really cute stuff! You could put a juke box in one corner of the salon...that would be really cute. Have lots of fun...=)

An underwater theme. Using salt water fish tanks, live rock, topical fish and crazy overhead architecture like huge sculptured anemones and colored lighting behind stained glass fixtures for an underwater effect. Call it fathoms...? Fish tanks are soothing and what is more nerve wracking than getting a tattoo and or a new hair do? That's why you will almost always see some kind of fish motif in any dentist office. Either tanks, fish decoration or underwater themes.
I think that fish and water scenes make the best tattoos too so...

I dont know if you like this but you should get 4 different colors. Paint thick stripes on the wall with the different colors. For example light brown, red, pink, teal make sure they contrast each other. Paint a brown stripe then a red and so on till your done with the wall. Use bright colors.

have some really neat lights in there, maybe some black lights, green lights, just not where they are getting their haircut, or by the tattoo chair, you want to have good lighting, but play hip music and dont be afraid to crank it up a bit, that will draw in the younger crowd and turn it into a hangout place almost, guaranteed to have loyal customers, hope this helps some

Serve wine (or some adult beverages) to your customers. Live plants -- jungle viney things. Welcome pets -- "pet"icures? Choose a theme for your craziness? (could be your favorite period in history) Display straight jackets -- for little kid kuts, when they just won't sit still? nah. Wear costumes -- holidays, worldwide. Juxtapose wild colors that most would think clash?
