My daughter (she is 4) is telling me she has an ear ache. What can I do for her. She has been fighting a cold for the past week. Do you think I should let her go to pre school today?

I probably wouldn't send her to preschool today. If she has been fighting a cold, she may have an ear infection or it could just be irritated by full sinuses. Try at-home remedies for today and maybe tomorrow. If she gets a really high fever or is in severe pain take her to the doctor right away. As far as at-home remedies:
1. Wash her face and hands with nice warm water and soap, if she has a cold and an earache, she will probably touching her ear and face most of the day, keeping it clean will help her heal faster; besides, the warmth may help reduce the pain and/or congestion.
2. Have her rest (maybe watch a movie etc) with a warm washcloth (warm it in the dryer or with warm water but make sure it is well wrung) against the sore ear or switch back and forth every hour or so if both are sore.
3. Give her a dose of acetaminophen or ibuprofen for the pain.

Contact your doctor if it gets worse or does not get better pretty quickly. Antibiotics are not required for all ear infections but she may need them if the infection doesn't clear itself soon.

Good Luck

You need to take her to the doctor instead of school. If she has an ear infection, there isn't much you can do at home. Plus, she'll suffer for no reason if you don't get her a prescription. Ear aches for small children are horrible. Also, look into getting her the ear infection shot. It's free at the shot clinics. I have gotten it for both my younger children and neither of them have ever had an ear infection yet.

I think you should take her to a doctor, ear infection is painful and needs fast medicine to control it, I think there is an ear drop medicine to make her feel better for now, or just a pain killer, but I think that you should check it as soon as possible, because my daughter had it once and she had to take to anti biotic injections that worked fast, it is so painful.

yes you should take her to the doctor, and not take ehr to school becaue she is going to be very uncomfortable there, ear aches are like the worst pains ever especially on a helpless little child, so try to take her to the doctors so they can give you something for her and so they can tell you exactly what is wrong with her.

Take her to the Dr.
Ear infections devlope from colds that travel to the ear.

Keep her home, call the doc and get her in. My daughter has had the same thing and her ear drum burst yeaterday. She started comlaining less than 24 hrs before it burst. I feel very guilty.

You should have her checked by a pediatrician for infection. Depending on if its viral or bacterial would you need an antibiodic.
Sometimes just a hair dryer on low will sooth the pain.
Also chewing something helps.

I would give her motrin and send her to school. and if it doesn't go away in a couple of days i would go to the doc and make sure she does not have an ear infection.
