Numerous reasons, boredom, feeling unloved, and I think the biggest number one reason is SELFISHNESS, they should have put that energy to play around back into their marriage.

I think its the classis "the grass is greener on the other side of the fence" meaning they see their own relationship with problems, money, kids, bills etc and see the "girl/guy at work" etc as a complete opposite.
I think everyone in long term relationships think about affairs, its just a test if they actually follow through with the feelings or just keep them as a fantasy......

Speaking from experience, and a 34 year marriage, people get bored, fall out of love, change as individuals, and need the thrill of having someone care to say they look nice, can make you laugh etc. My husband is only interested in what I have cooked for the evening meal, not me, so I have a guy online to share things with, we text and chat, one day we will meet. I love every minute we are together.

For some - the thrill
For some - just testing if they still have it
For some - looking for the right one (the one he/she is with is just to fill the empty spaces)
For some - To revenge
For some - Sex
For some - Pity
For some - Bored with same routine
For some - Lonely though with someone
For some - Need for excitement..
It could be any of 'em

Many times, people who seek out others are unhappy with their own life in some way, shape, or form. Even so that does not make a valid excuse for their behavior and in my opinion a very selfish act by not taking other's feelings into consideration.

If you mean extra marital affairs then it is possibly due to many different things.
Bored with wife/husband/partner.
Frightened that life is passing by and there is not enough excitement.
Sex starved.
Over sexed
Away from home and lonely.

brings excitment in their life, normality is pretty mundane so the prospect of lying to your lovely wife for once or twice a week and meeting up with Sharon the leggy blonde from Administration and you both experiencing the inner contours of the back seat of your car (and each other) is very riveting for some people, it makes them feel daring and important,....but it all ends in pain in the end

Because they are unhappy. Unfortunately this could be for many reasons, like they are bored, they are having a mid life crisis, they aren't doing well at work, they don't feel good about themselves, they don't feel loved or appreciated and the list goes on.

people have affairs because the other person makes them feel good about themselves, not because they are in love.
