CREATE A COMPLAINT COLUMN

This is a good question for the teacher of the class. It also depends on who is complaining. Are these other kids in the class who have written stories that aren't being published? If so, that needs to be resolved.

Some ideas --

-Be a little harsher editing the stories you are printing. Make sure they're concise and tight so they consume less space. Consider cutting back things you would like to keep to make sure you have room for other stories.

-Try to find ways to make the newspaper more pages. This has a cost associated with it, and schools have a budget. Maybe you can get a local business to help sponsor the school paper and thus help pay for the supplies needed to print a larger version.

-Maybe see if you can have an internet version of the school paper. Internet space is basically free, so you could have longer versions of your stories on the internet plus all the other stories you wish you had room to print. Your printed version could include a very brief synopsis of what's on the internet that week (or month, or however often you publish the printed copy).

Ultimately, you will still be left with stories that shouldn't be printed, either because they are bad topics or perhaps just poorly written. In the latter case, you need to tell the author what's wrong with the writting and see to it they have an opportunity to fix it.

If you're getting complaints from people who aren't in the school newspaper class, then you can tell those folks they should take the class if they want to have their stories printed.

But remember -- work with your teacher. Maybe have the class brainstorm ideas on this one class period, too. I bet you can get a lot of good ideas, and the other students can also learn that it's not easy to pick the stories that get printed.

My suggestions are to limit length of stories, put specific deadlines for inclusion, and make the writers be word conscious. Some people babble on,,,make them aware that each word must count. Use a heavy pen when editing....cut out the twigs and branches and get to the trunk. When you find good writers, keep them going ahead...but many stories are really pointless and to readers...boring. You've got to be tough, both by the editorial policy and also to critics. Try working with your English teacher to help you format an acceptable standard for your stories.

Do not give up on the class. Refer them to the teacher in charge of the newspaper, so she can explain why it could not be included. She probably has some guidelines on the maximum number of pages allowed as set by the school district budget allowance for it. Besides, being the editor of the school newspaper will look good on your college applications.

Gosh, you must be having a time!!!! You will have to go on saying that you are doing the maximum that u can. Mean while, think of this also.

Have a supplymentry may be once a month or two and squeeze in the best of extra stories in to that. Or name it "Anything goes" or "Graffity" or something to that effect and squeez in as much as you can.... All these people have taken pains to write because they like to see themselves in print. I do understand that u cant please everyone - but with a little extra thing like this u will be able to give satisfaction to many. Sometimes a little encouagement like that makes a world of difference to another for life!

Unfortunately, you're just going to have to get used to it. Look at any major newspaper in the country and you will find someone complaining about something. You are going to have to realize that you can't please everybody all the time so you are just going to have to make your own decision to print what you think is best and leave it at that. If anyone has a problem with that, refer them to your mentor (teacher).
Good luck.

Tell them, you can only choose a few and make sure those few are the ones that are most important to the entire class

I think that you should just ignore them and not let them get to you. Everything will work out in the end. Just remember things will get worse before they get better!! GOOD LUCK!
