Clove oil, is an essential oil from the clove plant which has a natural analgesic contents used primarily in dentistry for its active ingredient eugenol. Eugenol is also used in Medicine as a local antiseptic and anaesthetic.Eugenol inhibits platelet activity as well as depresses the sensory receptors of pain by suppressing the prostaglandin biosynthesis. Clove oil also has antihistaminic and antispasmodic properties, attributed to eugenol acetate.

Clover oil is numbing for a short time the pain transmitting nervs on gums. The easiest evidence is that you try it. Get some clover oil from the drugstroe or natural grocery and use a drop on your tongue. You will immediately feel the numbness.
The effect holds only for a few seconds, though, less than a minute.

Historically used as a pain reliever, Cloves do have a numbing effect on soft tissues, such as the mouth.
