It all depends what you want to use it for.
Having said that you can't go far wrong with the Ford Focus.
Drives well, handles well and parts are readily available.

Buy a Golf Tdi 3dr, there are loads to choose from, shop around for the best deal. For 6k, i would expect you'd get something like a 2000 - 2002. I'd recommend the 130bhp GT Tdi which would be a high spec turbo diesel hatchback. Power like you wouldn't believe with economy you won't believe either! As in 55mpg. Very reliable car, couple of my mates have them. Watch out for one that has the sh1t driven out of it. Happy hunting

No contest Ford focus 2.0 tdci , the tightest nippiest diesel i have ever driven in this category of car the 2.0litre model is a match for even a bmw diesel, now you cant have better cred than that ,what are you wating for.
You may have a problem with 6k on a 2.0 tdci but i found the 1.8 tdci not far behind, and probably a smoother engine ,but in the price range your looking for.

The Ford focus TDCi is hard to fault and if you go for the 113bhp model it is quite fast, although they are all good. Just avoid the old TD/TDi as it is awful.

The Golf TDi is also very good especially the 130/150bhp models but they are very expensive and £6k would probably only get you a high miler.

You can either look at lower priced options such as peugeot 306 they had some nippy ones in the range back in the day, otherwise a 206 is your best bet, and with 6k, you could get one a couple of years old and in good nick.

We've got a Peugeot 306 1.9TDI and it's a good car. It's comfortable, reliable and performs well (and as Peugeots are cheaper than VW's etc you'll probably get a better spec)
