You receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues in the same way you get saved - by faith. Read Gal. 3:2. Also, our asking for the Spirit is also important. Consider Luke 11:13. The gift of tongues has not ceased. Some cite I Cor. 13:8, but when you read the rest of the verse you notice that it also says knowledge will cease. Obviously, knowledge has not ceased; it has increased. Also, this chaoter states that tongues will only cease in heaven where they will no longer be needed. Verses 10-12 show that when we see Him face to face then, prophecy, tongues, and knowledge will cease. Tongues are a promise from Jesus to those who believe (Mark 16:17). Finally, we have the testimony of the early church. At Pentecost (Acts 2:1-4), the house of Cornelius (Acts 10:45-46), and the disciples of John (Acts 19:6) are just a few examples of those who spoke in tongues when baptized with the Holy Spirit. When you sincerely seek it, you find it. God Bless You.

1st Corinthians chapters 12- 14 tells very much about this subject. There are many spiritual gifts , it speaks of them in !st Cor. 12, but in verse 31, it says,... yet shew I unto you a more excellent way. Chapter 13 of same book, verse 1 Thought I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, adn have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.same book -chapter 14:4 I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophisieth that he that speaketh with tongues...
verse27 If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and tht by course; and let one interpret.28 But, if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church;....
Tongues, means languages, if it is not a spoken language that is spoken on earth today there will be no interpertor, because we can only learn languages that are taught on this earth and spoken by people, such as spanish, german, english, etc. How can a person interpret a language he has not been taught.

does God give people power to speak in tongues after they ask for it? NO!
Speaking in tongues is a very special gift:

Speaking in Tongues:
You have a room and there are 10 people in this room from 10 different countries of the world.
A teacher comes into the room and speaks to the 10 people.
Each person hears the teacher in his language from the town he was raised in, and marvels that the others in the room can understand the teacher!

This will happen again soon, this is one who is filled with the holy Spirit!

I think that speaking in tongues still happens today. Unfortunately alot of people are taught that you must speak in tongues in order to be filled w/the Holy Spirit. So we end up w/ alot of false tongues. I believe many things can happen when you are"filled" The bible says it is an endowment of power to be a better witness for Christ. Not that you must speak in tongues. The gifts of the Spirit are given as He sees fit to give them. Not just what we want.
As for the gifts of the Spirit were for back then. Then that would mean salvation was too. Salvation is still around today just as the gifts are.

Speaking in tongues is a gift that God took away years ago(1 Cor 13:8)The modern day tongues and prophecy are in defiance of Revelation 22:18,19 and are therefore unbiblical. No matter who prays over you you will not truly speak in tongues.

In the bible, the 'gift of tongues' meant that anyone could understand your speech, no matter what language they spoke. For example, someone who had the 'gift of tongues' could be speaking to a crowd in Greek, and people who DID NOT UNDERSTAND Greek would hear and understand the speaker as if he were speaking in their own language... just like the 'babblefish' in Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.

Somewhere along the line, Christians got the idea that if they babbled incoherently, they were 'speaking in tongues'... and being touched by the Holy Spirit. It is actually hysteria-induced gibberish.

Of course, just like the 'babblefish', this is pure horseshit. It was horseshit in biblical times... it is horseshit now... it will still be horseshit tomorrow.
