You have to be over 45 (or at least look over 45) Try asking for one and I bet you'll get ID checked....I mean it's not fair what if young people want to drink bitter, but I guess it takes 30 years of demolishing your taste buds with lager for people to be able to stand the delicious taste of bitter

When you are younger, you respond to peer pressure, as with everything in life, and it is a self-fulfilling prophecy; young lads see older men drinking bitter, ergo, by association they plump for brands that are advertised as being 'right' for their age group; as you grow older, more independent, and less resistant to the stomach curdling hangovers that lager provides free-of-charge, you experiment; you discover that bitter comes in many different tastes and strengths, and also does not give you the same grief as lager with all its chemically derived additives.
Cut out the learning curve and go straight for bitter; try and find a good pub selling 'London Pride' or 'Wadworths 6X'; from one who knows!

I think it's more a location thing then an age thing. When I lived in the country I drank bitter, but towns dont tend to look after the pipes, so lager is better. It's easier to down a pint of bitter! ;-)

Firstly in a pub or offlicence the law is clear ,18 or over.
as for old men drinking bitter and i presume you mean draft beer ,as keg bitter is just as gassy and bloaty as lager,as you get older you get wiser, lager generally speaking is a chemically enhanced liquer(unless you go to prague where your starapramen lager. and bud are a natural delight to the palate,)whereas draft bitter is a much more natural product and less likely to give you hangovers. So thats what thats all about.

Its a fashion thing, you can drink bitter as long as you are over the legal age for licenced premises. Most young people drink fizzy lager, because they have no mind of their own!! Bitter is a much stronger tasting drink, not necessarily stronger by alcohol content!!

in part it depends where you are in the country, some areas bitter is more common than lager and remember lager is more recent an import to the uk so the older generation just never got a taste for it

I love drinking bitter. I\m 31 and have been drinking it legally for 13 years. It's the drink of the gods!!!!

The only reason young men don't drink it is that they are stupid and haven't realised that there are far tastier beers out there thang carling and stella!

Any age to drink bitter. You can have a bitter shandy from 11 years of age I think. We always drank bitter shandy in a pub when we were little.
