If you didn't have money in the account, or not enough to cover the amount of the check, you did.
It is also illegal to "kite" a check. That's writing a check and hoping that your deposit makes it through the bank before the check clears.

Well if you would be aware of how much money you have in your checking account , you would know if you could cover it, if you doubt that you might have written a bad check, call your bank and ask them for your balance and tell them if they have a overdraft that can help you if you think you went over, they can add money to cover it for you.
