You can often tell by the extra wear at the big toe area of the sock. Sometimes there is an actual hole worn through.
I usually find out after I put it on, and see the wear at the wrong side.

does it truly matter what sock is on which foot? If it does then perhaps lining up the end points on the sock will work.
