They were two thieves. They never gave a name, but it was foretold that Jesus would die between two thieves. One went to heaven and one cursed Him.

Obviously, they were crucified by the people in power.
Definitely to get rid of them, at the same time make them repent

Crooks--thousands were executed by the Romans in that fashion...They even had to recycle the wood in later times.
