I think whatever you choose to do is going to be fine. You are taking the time to consider his feelings and he is going to notice that.
Ideas, it really depends on your age but I would do somthing that you guys have never done before together. If you are rich take him somewhere romantic. The best thing I ever did was I called my girlfreind at the time's boss (shes a good worker and I talked to her coworkers before to clear it). I asked politely if I could take her from work early for a surprise get away. I talked to her sister and had her pack her bags and little things. I had booked a room at a country bed and breakfast for two nights. They had little trails that we could walk during the day and I brought a camera so that she could take pictures as she needed. This takes some planning like telling her that I wanted her time for 2 days a week before and showing up to her work at 2 oclock with flowers.

It depends on what he likes, if there is something he really likes you could buy it for him or if it like sports (football) you can buy him good tickets for that 2 so he can go with a good friend or if he wants to go with you.
