The volcanic activity causes it. When a volcano erupts, the lava flows to the ocean where it cools. Cooling causes it to harden, therefore you have more solid earth.

Volcanic activity. The Hawaiian islands were formed and are still being formed by volcanic eruptions. The underwater eruptions of lava, that hardens into the landmass we know as Hawaii are continuous, thus continually adding to the square mileage of the islands.

Unfortunately, the life-cycle of volcanic islands is short when compared to continental land masses. Volcanic islands eventually sink back into the sea forming atolls in the process. The volcano's dome sinks back into the sea as coral reefs form on the outside slopes. Note the Hawaiian atolls of Midway and Kure.
