I primarily use my new HDTV for playing Xbox 360 and watching DVD's. My games show up looking great, and most DVD's I play look good too. However, yesterday I put in Smallville season 5 and it was pretty fuzzy, and didn't look high-def at all. Also, I used it to watch standard broadcast television, and again, it doesn't look that great. Is there any way to remedy these two problems? If it helps, here is the model I have:

Standard broadcast television and DVD's are not HD. If you have the tv set to stretch a Standard Definition signal from broadcast TV or a full screen DVD, it will look blurry. When watching SDTV don't stretch the picture it will look a little better, but it will always look blurry because you are used to the amazing quality of HD now.

There is a wide range of quality in both DVD and broadcast HDTV. Smallville in particular, although broadcast in HDTV, did not have a good picture quality; in fact, most of the WB shows had inferior HD quality (they weren't much better than standard TV). I suspect that a less-than-optimum job was done on transferring Smallville to DVD.

It's not the television, I think it may be the DVD player. Did you buy a new HD up-conversion DVD player? That is what you need. If a DVD was recorded in conventional non-HD mode, sometimes on a conventional DVD player it will fuzz. So you buy a DVD player that is an up-conversion model. This converts the format to one that is close to HD when the DVD plays (if not there already). I bought a "Light On" HD-up model from Costco for $115 that works GREAT

The sad and simple truth is, you can't receive HD footage without an HD signal. And on your SDTV broadcasts and SD DVD's, neither of those are producing that type of signal. You'll have to wait until XBOX 360 ships their HD DVD player; then you'll have to buy movies in HD DVD format to take full advantage of high-definition media.

I found one of the best DVD players out there. It's from Oppo. Do a search for it. It is $199 with a built-in Faroudja scaler and has a DVI output. In many DVD player reviews it beats out the $5k Denon DVD players....

It has dramatically improved the picture on my HD front projection system as it upconverts the DVD picture to 720p/1080i.

NOTE: I do not work for Oppo. I am just a home theater geek.
