Here's my theory;

All addictions are an attempt to create a womb like environment. In other words, a place that is safe, benevolent, soft and dreamlike. Expecially when you are talking about substance (drug and alcohol) addiction. Some of the other additive behaviors, (shopping, sex, gambling etc.) I believe are an attempt to create an environment where a very young child is given aboslutely everything they have ever wanted and that gives them the attention of some else, makes them feel good, special and above all else loved.

I have to believe that people who suffer from any of these addictions experienced an early life and a dramatic end to the security, attention, love and caring that they previsouly had. Adoption, alcoholic parents, distracted parents, dysfunctional parents, divorced parents, missing parents, abusive parents (or substitute caregiver for parent)

What reall scares all human beings who act out through addictive behaviors is the FEAR of being alone. Deep down inside, they have a mortal fear of being completely and utterly alone and they make themselves comforted by being high, drunk, buying things, taking extreme risks with money sex etc.

It's like watching a very disturbed child rocking back and forth in a corner. They imagine that they are being rocked by a loving and compassionate parent when they are actually comforting themselves.

The alcohol haze and the drug haze of a high are a re-creation of floatintg in amnionic fluid. Muffled sounds, soft environment and a body sensation of floating care free.

How can we face what really scares us? By realizing that we are never truly alone. We have helpers, guides, teachers, angels and others who are our constant companions and even if we chose to isolate ourselves from people we know so we can act out our little "I'm alone" fantasy with a bottle of vodka, we aren't alone. And let me be clear here-addiction IS a choice. And continuing to act out addictive behavior is a choice. Being sober is a choice.

Deciding what you get out of the addictive behavior is the single biggest revelation you wiull ever have.

Realizing the TRUE cost ( in happiness, realtionships, money, work etc.) of addiction and chosing NOT to pay that price anymore, is the end of addiction.

Our addictions give us ease and comfort so that we don't have to face reality and take responsibility for our own well being.

First, we have to be willing to walk through the discomfort we are avoiding when we indulge in the addiction. Second, we have to make not indulging in the addiction the most important thing in our lives. Third, we have to do whatever it takes not to participate in the addiction for the rest of our lives.

Simple, not easy.

Your question rings true. Alot of us do medicate our fears with addictions. For me, I know I eat a lot of junk food if I'm sad, but it never fulfills me and just makes me more sick. Hope we all can overcome this though.

each person has their own personal addictions which may or may not be good. each person has free will and freedom of choice to do what they want as long as they do not interfere with the rights of others. F.D.R. stated, " the only thing we have to fear is fear itself. "

what you fear I may not and what I fear you may not so everyone has to face their own fears by themselves but can obtain support from others.

Just face it. Addictions just pacify fear and not very well in my opinion.

Invite Jesus into your heart and life, and you won't have to carry those burdens alone. Through the stripes Jesus took for our sins, we are all healed, if we let Him into our heart and life.

Isaiah 53:5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.
