It depends.

1) I believe this engine has interference valve trains. So, if the timing belt fails the pistons can slam into and break the valves. It is important to have a current/good timing belt. Not too expensive.

2) This is a great car in many respects. Good gas mileage, excellent handling, good overall performance, attractive.

3) It gets good highway mileage, given the performance.

4) It is very reliable, when maintained. However, Nissan motors tend to be a bit more complicated than a Honda or Toyota, consistent with their strong performance engineering methods. So, repairs can be more pricey than other Japanese makes, but not on par with the Germans typically.

5) Nissan engines are pretty bulletproof. In fact, it is not uncommon for a well maintained engine to go 250,000 trouble free miles.

Bottom line - get the car checked by a mechanic. A well maintained high mileage 300 zx could be a steal. If you drive 25K miles per year, and have a car with 150K miles, you could drive this car with little trouble for another four to six years. If the car was neglected or in need on major TLC walk away.

Give it to me free? That car is one year shy of it's 21st birthday! The therory if relatively is as soon as you get it home it overheats and melts down the engine. Or the 2,400 dollar digital dashboard quits. Or how's this you switch on the A/C compressor and it locks up fan belt smoking, R-12 is not available anymore $600. new compresor and convert it to R-134 costs $1,000. Don't do it unless your neighbors don't mind another car broken down in your driveway.

If the oil was changed on a regular basis the car should run for a good 100k to 300k miles.
Good luck
