Meiosis is the process that allows one diploid cell to divide in a special way to generate haploid cells in eukaryotes. On the other hand, mitosis is the process by which a cell separates its duplicated genome into two identical halves. It is generally followed immediately by cytokinesis which divides the cytoplasm and cell membrane. This results in two identical daughter cells with a roughly equal distribution of organelles and other cellular components.

In mitosis two daughter cells are formed identical to mother cell hence also called equational division and in meiosis four daughter cells are formed each with the half number of chromosomes hence also called reductional division.Most importantly in meiosis crossing over of chromosomes in prophase I takes place which results in the variation in human beings i.e. all are different.

Mitosis is the process of cell division; meiosis is the production of haploid gametes from diploid cells. Diploid cells usually have two copies of each chromosome (one from each parent); as a result of meiosis, each diploid cell produces four haploid gametes, each of which has only one copy of each chromosome. E.g. in humans, normal diploid cells have 46 chromosomes but gametes (egg or sperm) only have 23. Mitosis, meanwhile, results in an exact duplication of the cell, so that the two resulting "daughter" cells have the same number of chromosomes and in fact are genetically identical to the parent in every way. Note that both haploid AND diploid cells can undergo mitosis in some organisms (e.g. yeast), while only diploid cells can undergo meiosis.
