That's called training in motion. Girls drink from straws because of the things they "drink" from later on in life. Boys drink from the hole for the same reasons. It's a mental thing.

Socially acceptable? I have never even heard of such nonsense. Straws are a sanitary way of drinking out of a container that may not necessarily be clean. To even think that there is some kind of etiquette that would keep a man from using a straw is just ridiculous.

It's totally acceptable for a guy to drink from straws. My bf does that and he looks just as masculine & sexy. It's especially sweet when we share a drink with the same straw. I also think that it shows manners if a guy uses a straw instead of chugging down the drink like a caveman.

It is socially acceptable for men to drink through straws, I have seen tons of guys walking about with a McDonald's milkshake or coke in their hand and a straw in the drink, do what you want to do I say.

Nothing wrong with it. I went to a restraunt once and was drinking out of a straw, and I saw a lipstick stain on the rim of the glass where it hadn't been cleaned well enough. I was glad I was drinking out of a straw, and promptly asked the waitress to bring me another glass. It doesn't matter what gender you are, it's more sanitary.
Those that say it's a fallic symbol, get your mind out of the gutter. Who cares what people look like when they're eating and drinking, it's something that everyone does every day, it doesn't have to be done totally dainty each time we do it, especially if noone's around. That's not to say that we should chew with our mouths open, we should just be aware of the company we keep and adjust our manners accordingly. I wouldn't expect to see a guy out for a beer and a slice with his buddies cutting up his pizza with a fork. Just as I wouldn't expect to see anyone eating their salad with their hands.

Since when is it not socially acceptable to drink from straws?
I suppose we could have some long winded speech about how drinking from a small area means you have to act more daintilly than just chugging from the glass lip.

For myself, I drink from straws because I don't like the feel of a strange glass against my lips. Kooky, I know. Boys should be able to handle that kind of thing.

The only reason I can think of is that it looks a bit feminine. When I drink from a straw, I hold it and a glass in a 'girly' way.

Because girls usually drink with a straw as to not ruin her lipstick. If your a guy who wears lipstick, then I'm sure you won't be bothered about using a straw!

I don't care about what's socially acceptable, I drank nine pints of brown ale through a straw the other night and nobody batted an eyelid.
