I want to be HONEST with you... everyone will probably tell you it's rainy in the winter and that it rains alot and that it never gets hot... That's what I was told... It's BS... I moved up here in Lakewood right outside McChord A.F.B. and 7 minutes from Fort Lewis my hubby is AF... Everyone told me it's always rainy and that it never gets hot.... I want to knock all of them out... It was HOT this summer and on base housing doesn't have AC and it's extremely hard to find a place off base with AC... Rent is way over priced up here if you live off base, depending on your BAH you'll get stuck living in a hell hole... And what ever you do Don't move to Lakewood... Crime is high here and most people don't speak English... It rains* they call it rain I call it annoying mist that is hard to get off your windshield with wipers* most of the winter and the snowy month is January... we're suppose to be in the mid to upper 60's for highs but It's gonna be 80 today and tomorrow... Remember no AC... To me this is hot.... It might not be for you but you should know about it...It is Beautiful up here but I don't like the living conditions.... And no one knows how to drive... I-5 is a night mare... Sorry to keep rambling on but I really don't like living here... ( It was well above 100 more than enough times this summer just to let you know) Everyone say's that it's been an unusual summer. That may be true but They still need AC up here for when it does get hot...
I don't want you to think that this place is complete hell.... Like I said before it is beautiful up here and there is alot of stuff you can do... You can travel to the mountains*Mt.Rainier*, Visit Seattle, swim and fish in the summer, you can go bear hunting, and well hunting in general, Most of the stuff is outdoor type stuff... I have 2 kids who like doing these things but once the misty fog crap rolls in they're stuck indoors for the most part... You might love this place alot of people do... I wish you the best of luck no matter where you go... I didn't want to trash this area too much since I'll be living here for at least 6 years...I hope this info helps... If you want to know anything else in *my Opinion* feel free to ask...

I've lived in the area for 14 years, and a lot depends on where you live. If you are closer to the Puget Sound, it stays warmer in the winter and is cooler in the summer by 5-10 degrees.
If your mood is very dependant on the Sun, you may find it depressing during our average (or wetter) winter. We only get about 35" of rain a year but most of it comes between Nov. and April. Snow is rare, except in higher elevations (above 500').
Average high temps during the winter are in the 40s with lows still above freezing. Summer average high in July and Aug is mid 70s to 80.
In my opinion (I do not "need" the sun) it is one of the best weather places in the US, because I hate extreme hot or cold. Hardly anyplace has AC, but you usually only need it for 2 weeks a year.
Tacoma is kind of considered a little brother to Seattle. It has a lot to offer, but does have some "suspect" areas. If you are going to live off-base, make sure you research the neighborhood. We have friends that live on the East side of the base in Spanaway and are satisfied with their neighbors.
If you like the outdoors, you will love the area. It is always green (all the winter rain keeps it that way) and there are so many places to hike, bike, camp, day-trip you will never run out of a new place to explore. There are also many "city" things to do between Olympia, Tacoma, and Seattle like concerts, broadway shows, museums, etc.
Traffic does drive you crazy. The area is pretty much in a North-South corridor, so there are not many options. I-5 can become maddening, especially between Ft. Lewis and Tacoma. There are two bases (McChord AFB also) and the Kitsap Penninsula's main route comes into I-5 in Tacoma (Hwy 16) so rush hour starts early and ends late.
I have lived and been stationed in every corner (and the middle) of the country, and this is where I chose to stay.

I was stationed at Fort Lewis for a total of six years. The weather is good. The winters have next to no snow, but they are wet. From mid Sept to mid May you will get rain eight to ten days out of the month. The rest of the year is awesome. Rarely hits 90 degrees and there is so much to do there that if someone gets bored, they are just lazy...
It is a great place and one of the best kept secrets in the Army. Hope this helps.

Sorry it's awful.
No snow, never gets much colder than 40 degrees. The entire basketball season the sky is grey. It rains a tiny bit throughout the day almost every day. Lots of rain but not like downpours, mostly like drizzle.
In the summer it is georgous and always between 65 and 85. You will love it during that time of year. Rule of thumb: if you see basketball on TV, you won't see the sun.
