One of the prettiest new color combinations is chocolate brown and pink. Pink would probably be objectionable for your husband but maybe if you could find an antique rose color comforter in a very sensual fabric like slubbed silk and pile lots of velvet and brocade pillows on the bed he could be persuaded that the pink family is more sensual than girly when combined with brown.

When using earth tones you really need a comforter that picks up other color in the room. For instance, color of the drapes, or color from an outstanding picture. Also don't hesitate to to use a decorative throw rug on top of the carpet. Use lite window treatments to give an more "open" appearance. Burgundy is nice, but also consider greens and subdued shades of orange--yes-orange. Vased flowers also add a nice touch, esp with light wood.
For a splash more color, consider using ceiling border. Very easy to put up, and it can add a whole different dimension to the room.

Sage would work...But, my choice would be a medium shade of blue. You could even go as bright as turquoise. Blue and brown are a great contract and would also add cheerfulness to your room.
You could stay in the earth tones with a different shade of brown or beige for a monochromatic look. My favorite idea is to find a napkin or place mat that contains your current colors, and take it with you when you shop for comforters. . .and inquire which salesperson has a good eye for color to add an additional opinion.

I can't give you a website, but I'm looking at a photograph from Canada's Chatelaine magazine for Dec. 2012. Soft/light blue (watery blue?) looks fab. with chalk white walls, plain cream bedcover, warm oak coloured frames, warm oak night table. Taupe lamp shade on a white lamp. Cushions on the bed have taupe and watery blue patterned covers. If I had the money, I'd change my bedroom to look like it, but that's out of the question.

I would go with a deep color and something that works in the same "season" as brown - like autum colors. A dark red or green would be best, I think. And if you choose a pattern, the red or green with a dark yellow or gold in the pattern should be nice. Get curtains that match and that will set the whole room off.

I would go with an old-fashion quilt. Something with rich, dark colors.
