i will have to go to some avents he will be at. i think i am mainly afraid of being sucked in and affected by him. im not weak but i am frightened

Be assertive, go to the events with a positive outlook. If you are negative, withdrawn, or show weakness, the manipulator will attempt to suck you back in. These low life's thrive and exist on other peoples vulnerability and seek out those who are easy targets. Make yourself less accessible and difficult to approach. Surround yourself with people at the event and act as if he is not in the room. Dress and act in a very confident manner...make your entrance and exit quickly. And above all else, if he attempts a conversation...say something like.. Its been a pleasure seeing you, now you'll have to excuse me....and walk off. Say it with confidence and boring.."got better things to do" tone.
If you are in fear of him on a more serious level, consider a restraining order.

Always be beside someone so u r not alone at the event. Avoid eye contact absolutely. If he talks to you, excuse yoruself and get ur buddy to bail u out of uncomfy situations
