Every time I am in the library, there is a different inconsiderate moron close by with headphones on, playing the most obnoxious and loud music possible. Last time I looked around at the other people by me, and said "sure is nice of him to supply the music for everyone". They all laughed, and I think he kind of guessed what was going on, because he turned his crap down a little at least.

It's the same reason people build big houses, play music loud in cars, act tough, or bully people or animals. It's an insecurity problem. They think that having control over what you listen to is giving them more control over the world around them.

I'm sure the people who do this play their music loud everywhere, not just at the library.
After listening to music with headphones for a while, you get used to how loud it is and don't notice it as much. This is a documented phenomenon. Some people tend to turn up the volume when this happens, causing the music to get louder and louder over time.

at least he's trying by wearing headphones. Could be hearing loss FROM listening to music so loud. Personally if I had my "jams" in my ears that loud, I wouldn't be able to get anything done in the Library. sheesh.

It is known that headphone cause hearing loss.... the people wearing them are now hearing impaired so they have to play loud !
If they are playing loud to simply make a statement... that statement is : "Look at me I will be deaf soon... I am a complete idiot, no parts missing !"

I find that so rude. It's a library... that place is supposed to be quite, and some jerk does not even think to be nice enough to turn the music down so no one is disturbed
