Jim, this is not merely a "claim" of Christians; it's a teaching from Jesus Christ.
John 4:2 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I proceeded forth and came from God; nor have I come of Myself, but He sent Me. 43 Why do you not understand My speech? Because you are not able to listen to My word. 44 You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it."
This should not make communication come to a halt. Christians believe that everyone on the earth is in one of two categories: a child of God or a child of Satan; at one time, we were ALL in the second category. Communication would only come to a halt if we said that some people cannot become a child of God; however, what we preach here is that EVERYONE, including you, Jibba Jabba, Spookshow Baby, and the others of you who love to torment us, can be saved from what lies ahead. But, unfortunately, our message is either not communicated well (which is our fault) or not received well (which is yours). That's where Satan comes in: he works very hard to make sure you do not receive the message.
Peace.

In ancient Jewish tradition Satan is simply an angel doing the work that God assigned to Satan to do.
The word Satan means challenger. With the idea of Satan challenging us, or tempting if you will. This description sees Satan as the angel who is the embodiment of man's challenges. This idea of Satan works closely with God as an integral part of Gods plan for us. His job is to make choosing good over evil enough of a challenge so that it becomes clear to us that there can be only one meaningful or logical choice.
Contrast this to Christianity, which sees Satan as God's opponent. In Jewish thought, the idea that there exists anything capable of setting itself up as God's opponent would be considered polytheistic or setting up the devil to be an equally powerful polarity to god or a demigod.
Oddly, proof for The Christian satan/devil mythology is supposedly found in the ancient Jewish texts that were borrowed to create the bible. One can’t help but wonder how Christians came up with such a fantastically different interpretation of Gods assistant Satan in their theology.
Other hints about Satan’s role in human relations can be seen if you look at the name Lucifer. It meaning in the original tongue translates as Light bearer or light bringer. Essentially the bringer of enlightenment. The temptations of the Satan idea bring all of us eventually into Gods light. Hardly the Evil entity of Christian mythology.
Love and blessings

Yeah, I'm not really sure I understand their line of reasoning either....The only spirit I have in me is mine. The Christian devil aka Satan does not exist and therefore has no "hold" over me or influence on me. Honestly I think it's a copout for serious lack of personal responsiblity but that's just my opinion. They (the fundie conversion driven Christians) need something to crusade against so they invent these spiritual wars to give their lives purpose.....again, just my opinion.

Everyone who confesses to be a Christian today, at some point had the spirit of satan in them. We were born with the proclevity to choose to do wrong, sort of like a natural instinct. That's why Jesus came, to save us from sin, and the sins of wrongdoing. The spirit of satan is simply the spirit of wrongdoing, and the spirit of Christ is defined as RIGHTEOUSNESS!

I really wish someone would delineate "christians" from "those christians that we make fun of" and "the others that have beliefs not quite so outrageous-type christians that are cool-type peeps"
Although it is pretty amusing to holler out of a car window at someone "THE DEVIL IS BEHIND YOU, FREAK"...
tee hee...good times

I laugh if I hear something like that. LOL
It would be even funnier to fart on cue right after they claim the spirit of Satan is in you, then say "thank you, he's gone now" as they choke on the smell. LOL

Well of course! Don't you know that Swedenborg said we are born into the first day? This "mystic" has much more weight than you do. Just Google the internet. Here's a clue - he is not really a mystic but a seer.
That hell is a state of mind:
For man is born in evils of all kinds, thus in hell,
for evils are hell; (Apocalypse Revealed 62)
That damnation is the first state we are born into:
Man's first state, which is one of damnation, is every
one's state by heredity from his parents.(Divine Providence 83[2])

People over the age of 16 or so who still believe in a bogeyman from hell are pretty much suffering from FCM - fearful Christian mindlock.

Yeah. How can you rationalize with someone who has the unwavering mindset that everyone who doesn't believe as they will is going to be eternally tortured.
