i've read most of these answers and they are all crap! of course a lot of pit bullls attack people and other animals. it's in their breeding to be aggressive. same as rotts, standard poodles, and shepherds. these dogs were originally bred for security, but domestication (i.e. making them pets instead of working dogs) has tempered their aggressive behavior, but only to a degree. we cannot undo hundreds, sometimes thousands. of years of conditioning.
i have owned other dogs bred for other purposes and never had to train them to do what they were originally trained for. herding dogs will herd without training and vermin dogs will kill rats and such without being trained to do so. you dont train a lab to love water or a pointer to point out a covey of quail. you can however hone their inherent instincts to perform to your liking. but no dog is inherently "bad".
all animals possess an inherent nature (including man) and at best all we can do is try to instill other behaviors.

Wow this is a really biased question. You ask it like Pits are the only dogs who attack someone. Okay first of all Pits are good dogs. However a Pit Bull or ANY other dog that attacks a person is mentally unstable. A dog is 10 times more likely to attack or act aggressively if the dog is not fixed and they are more likely to attack if they spend a good part of there day chained in the yard. Pit Bulls are the number 1 abused dog in America. Maybe that has something to do with it? Hmm... Over 1 million Pits are euthanized every year. Also I do not appreciate how you make is seem like all Pits are going to attack you. I own a Pit Bull and I have never seen aggression in him. According to the American Temperament Society Pit Bulls have high passing rate of 83.5% for test ran on there temperament.
Please educate yourself before you open your mouth and make discriminatory and derogatory comments.

MYTH: PIT BULLS DO NOT HAVE LOCKING JAWS!
There is not a mechanism in there jaws that enables them to lock down!
Pit Bulls do have very strong jaws 1,600 pounds per sq inch. However then cannot "lock on". It may seem that way because the do have every strong jaws but they also have a lot of determination and do not give up easily. This where this horrible myth sprouted. I hope to have cleared this up for at least a few people.

In recent years, pit bulls have gained more than just a foothold in the public awareness. Unscrupulous breeding and negative media attention have resulted in many apartment complexes, neighborhoods and even counties imposing bans on the breed, citing them as "inherently dangerous" to the public.
But did you know that pit bulls, despite the fact that they were originally bred to fight with each other, were also bred to be trustworthy and friendly to people? These dogs actually earned the nickname "nursemaid's dog," because they were so reliable with young children.

Today, however, the breed often attracts the worst kind of dog owners--those who are only interested in them for fighting or protection. It's a shame what has happened to this loyal and affectionate breed-but as the pit bull population has increased so rapidly, shelters are now struggling to deal with an overflow of image-plagued, hard-to-place dogs. And despite its illegality, people are still training and breeding pit bulls to participate in dog fights in cities and towns across the country.

From my experience, it's because they have been mistreated and taught to attack. In most cases of attacks with Pitt's have been people are in there territory and like all dogs they feel they have to protect there space. They are great dogs and like any dog it is the way they are raised. People need to respect there space.

A dog doesn't attack people, they don't make any exceptions!!! they attack whenever they feel unsecure, and not every pitbull attack, every dog has his own temperament, you may be attack by a Chihuahua too, but the consequences would be worse for the little dog, training helps to tame a dog but it's not a warranty. There are very nasty mean dogs and there are very lovely dogs, breed is not a factor.

Pitbulls are known to be more agressive, but the simple answer is that they are dogs. all dogs will do that at some point. No amount of nutruring and training will make them forget what they are.

I had a pitbull for almost 15 years and from birth to death he never attacked anyone or anything.

Why do any breed of dog attack people? Because their owners haven't properly socialized and trained them. The question should be why does the media target pitbull bites when people get attacked by small breeds and dalmatians more often.

Not all Pit Bulls attack people, and when they do its generally because of the ignorance of the owner, or the person being attacked, if you think it might be dangerous dont go near it

I don't think that all of them do, I think it is a matter of handling. They are desired by people who fought dogs because they have a large locking jaw, and they are larger stronger dogs. Yes, they were bred for fighting, but it is a conditioned response, whether or not they will turn mean. You can make any dog mean and make him attack. I do not particularly like pit bulls, but I do not think that they are all bad, I think they just have gotten a bad reputation.

The same reason any other dog does. Lack of proper training and handling. I own a 9 year old amstaff that has never bit anyone. He also plays with my grand kids. No problem.
