the protein balance is wrong for cats, you might think about an automatic food dispenser.
when i first read your question, i was prepared to give you a recipe for "Alpo hash" that i fed my ex on a few occasions when he slapped me or the kids around. I've never tasted it, but that fat jerk seemed to enjoy it...
1 can Alpo small chunks
1 small can tomato sauce
1 potato diced and precooked
1 small onion, diced
saute all ingredients in a skillet until the onion turns transparent... serve with a snide comment, like "I hope you choke on it" sit back and enjoy watching the dawg eat dog food

Feed the cat to the dog. Solves a lot of problems. They are too old to remember to feed the cat? Well, there you go. They won't even miss it. Plus when they stop smelling the cat s*** you can be a hero by taking credit.

unlike dogs - cats are TRUE carnivours they need a meat source in their food - dog food doesnt have as much meat
ALPO is one of the worst dog foods out there.. and as far as cat food goes - Meow Mix is pretty bad
by-products = beaks feet and feathers and are preserved with a chemical pesticide liked to many problems (banned from human use)
BHT, BHA - chemical preservatives - very bad
corn - pathetic source of protien for dogs or cats
feed a food with CHicken MEAL, lamb MEAL, or turkey MEAL as the number one ingredient and you will notice some amazing things - firstly the pet wont need to eat nearly as much - then you will notice it doesnt poop nearly as much
the good quality foods are only sold in pet supply stores - yes they are more $ per bag but each bag lasts WAY longer - and you have fewer health issuses when the pet is older...
your grandparents need to feed her daily - you can help buy writting them reminder notes or putting out an extra bowl so they fill 2 bowls instead of 1 (incase they forget a day)
however feeding her dog food will cause her to starve to death slowly from poor nutrition

No, cats require a different diet then dogs. Just get a big bag of cat food and leave it at your grandparents. You can even get a self feeder in case they forget.

well, meow mix is probably almost the worst thing you can feed a cat, dog food is even worse, if the cat eats that for a month I believe it will go blind.
you should feed the cat natural choice complete care indoor formula. http://www.nutroproducts.com/ncccia.asp

NO! Cats need taurine. It is essential to their diet, and dog food does not contain it. Plus, dog food doesn't have the amount of calories a cat needs to properly function.
I highly suggest you read the information on this site;
http://www.catinfo.org
I feed my cat's two meals of Wellness canned food a day, with occasional dry snacks of Nature's Variety kibble. But a cat's main food source should be wet. Cats on mostly dry food diets tend to be dehydrated.
