It is a structured enviroment where you are told what to wear, when you have freedom to move about (that varies by prison). You eat food that you buy in a canteen and you eat the food the state provides (usually not very good). You're counted all the time and woke up about every two hours to be counted in the middle of the night. You are provided with healthcare but it is rudimentary. If you mind your own business and do everything the guards tell you then you don't have to spend time in segregation (locked in a cell with no radio or television 23 hours a day). The toughest thing about prison is the other inmates. They will steal from you, want to fight you, want to rape you or anything else they can get away with. The guards are there for protection but they can't be everywhere at once and you can't snitch or you'll have to "check in". If not, someone will come after you.

I have lots of experience with the prison system, although I have never been there my husband spent lots of time there and it is not a very rewarding place to be, you are away from everyone who loves you and all the friends that tell you they will be there for you and write to you will not. When it is time for a visit and you don't get one even though you have been looking forward to it all week and nobody shows up, it is not like you can go looking for them to ask them why. Sometimes you can't even call them because it is not your time to use the phone. You are told what to do, when to eat when to sleep when to go outside. You are not in control of your life anymore. My sister-in-law is in the system right now and believe me she wishes she would have done things differently. She is not a strong person and that is what it takes to make it in this kind of envirement. Other inmates take her food and there is nothing that she can do about it. Now the prison system has unruly inmates and everyone is getting stabed up including the guards.

My cousin spent some time in a foreign jail. He told me that one of the prisoners showed him how to make weapons from ordinary objects. Definitely some scary people there.

I was a Correctional Officer in Missouri, and let me tell you that it is nothing to be proud of to be in prison!! 85% OF THE INMATES THAT GET OUT WILL COME BACK !! They get institutionalized!! If your about to go to prison, I'm sorry that your made that wrong choice to get in trouble. get off that wrong track and get on a new one. It will make you feel better about yourself in the future!!
