I think you have misunderstood someone. For ACTIVE body building, the typical amount of daily protein is 1 g per pound of LEAN body weight, or a cruder version is 0.8 g per pound of total body weight.

That is far more protein than someone needs for maintenance.

It is not possible to consume your bodyweight in protein. The usual formula for protein intake is 1 gram of protein per kilogram of bodyweight. So if you weigh 180lbs that equals 82 kilograms so you would need 82 grams of protein a day. Some people just do 1 gram per pound of bodyweight. Usuing the same example, the 180 lb person would need 180 grams of protein.
