I am clapping at your question!! I have wondered the same thing!
My old Dr was a Muslim woman and she was hardly oppressed, and I am a Christian and not a slut.

Again i would like to say that not all Muslim women are oppressed, and not all Western women are slutty.
For us westerners the reason is the most common image of Muslim women that we see are:
1.) The women who are treated as dogs by the Taliban
2.) The honor killings commited by Muslims in backwater regions of the globe like Africa and parts of Asia including Pakistan
3.) The women in the supposed heart of Islam, Saudi Arabia, who cannot even drive their own car or wear even jeans and regular shirts.
For Muslims the most likely reason is that the most common image you guys see of Western women are:
1.) people like Paris Hilton and Britney Spears and...
2.) Hugh Hefner's Playboy empire.
Yes you're right it is pretty much ingrained in our heads by the fact that there are examples which we cannot ignore, but some people think these examples represent the whole...which should not be.

There are totally different cultures that don't understand each others will have this kind of misunderstand normally; Each one has no rights to criticize others cultures rules and conditions .Also they have their own reason to keep their culture path with them selves where ever they go.
Also I don't think western thinks all Muslim women are oppressed;They think Muslim women has no rights to exposed them selves against their masters who are the men;
But all Muslims thinks western women are slutty (Actually this is oppressed ) why the western women has no culture and discipline to keep themselves as Muslim women do.
Every culture people think their own culture conditions and behavior limits are the real one and others are not. That's why .
I guess The word oppressed is harsh and hard to criticize any others culture people.

I know next to nothing about muslims. But I do believe that the women who cover their hair/faces are oppressed, even if they are doing it of their own free will. I believe they're doing it to show their submission to allah, or so I've heard.
That to me is oppression. Ugh! It sickens me. However, I don't make a point of going after them. I only say this because you asked.
I imagine they think we are loose because we ARE. Being loose is a good thing if you ask me. Much healthier than being repressed.
I don't gain anything from feeling this way. It just is.

We need to experience each others culture. Obviously when we see a woman in a bur-qua we are conditioned to think she's oppressed. There's also that sharia law that is followed over there that causes us to think these things. But the biggest problem that we face is that we are scared. We fear the unknown and frankly, after having traveled this world, everyone is the same. We come from the same source so why do we fear each other?
We could break down barrier more effectively by learning each others languages and no automatically thinking the other is to be feared or stupid.

I only think Muslims are oppressed by their religion, same goes for Christians and every other religion. This applies to Men, Women, Children, and usually non members that live nearby.

According the Moslem standards, Western women are pretty slutty. What do you call this business of dating, free sex and boyfriends if not whoring? If "liberated" means dressing up like whores and going out to copulate with strangers, Moslem women are far from liberated.

Hate is the key.
Hate what you fear the most and this will create a wall to distant yourself from what you are afraid to see, live, experience.
Westerners hate Islam and they do not agree that Women wear chaddar (veil) as they themselves wouldnot like women in their country to be like that. And muslims hate to see women exposed. So they criticise each other.
But if you are intelligent you would understand that you cannot think and judge a different culture from yours in your society's way of living.

People believe only what they want to believe. That's why, also because of the lack of knowledge on Islam. But I don't mean JUST as the religion, they might not know any Muslims. That's why, also the media and stereotypes.

I know Muslim women even in the west. I'd say they are oppressed. I can just imagine what it must be like for women in the Muslim world.
According to Muslim standards, if you date rather than simply being sold into marriage, you're slutty.
