She was dumped at my house and she was already pregnant. I don't have the money to take her to the vet for an ultrasound. I can take her if its an emergency though. Her milk came in about 2 days ago but she isnt nesting or throwing up or anything. She still eats like a horse. She is outside and my husband wont let her come in the house because we have 2 babies and he thinks she could bite them if she is in pain. She has a dog house outside with plenty of hay. I just want to make sure and be here if she needs help so any info about what I should look for when she gets close to delivering would be helpful. Thanks.

give her time there is nothing you can do to speed up or help her childbirth is a natural process if it is her first time giving birth you may have to help her break open the bags around the pups but considering she DOESNT know you that well you may need to stay away or you will get BITTEN!! my dog knew my family but when she had pups she wanted them NO WHERE near her puppies and would go after them so you need to be very careful and gain her trust and an U/S in not needed for a dog she will be fine on her own!

Please please take her to the vet! Just explain to the vet that someone dumped her off at your house and you cannot afford to take care of her! Many vets will feel sorry for the stray and take her in for free. Having her puppies in the presence of the vet in a warm place is a lot better than making her have her puppies outside by herself! Even if she has a 'dog house with plenty of hay', she or her puppies can still get infected with something outside, or contract fleas or another ailment. And what if there is an emergency and you need to get her to the vet? If she is aggressive towards you you will have no hope of moving her...and she certainly won't let you take her puppies. Even if everything goes perfectly, you will still need to take the puppies to the vet to get their shots...do you have the money for that? They need deworming and shots every week/2 weeks.

IMO you should take her to the vet now, before she goes into labor. If you take her in as an emergency, you will have to pay b/c they will think you are trying to get over on them. If you take her into the vet now, they will let you watch the birth and maybe have the dog or one of the puppies. There's no reason to keep her in the backyard when you can find a vet who will give her the best of care indoors.

Heather is right if you are not experienced you want to give her space. Do be sure to keep the babies away even after she has the babies. Some moms get territorial about their young.

I would get ahold of your local animal rescue (not shelter or spca). All petsmarts work with animal rescues I would contact them about you fostering them until they are old enough to be separated from mom or another foster home opens up and they can be adopted to loving homes. All the rescues I have worked with make adopters sign contracts and do home visits to make sure they are good homes.

If you would like me to help in anyway feel free to contact me. I will help you find a rescue in your area. I know I would jump at helping you with our rescue. You at least cared enough to take her into your life. Most really dont'.

Don't worry about mom it may not be the ideal situation for her but it is better than death. She doesn't need an ultrasound but her and the babies should see a vet after delivery. A rescue that you are willing to do some will usually help with the finances. They will make sure that the babies get their shots altered and good families to love them.

if you have no money to care for this dog properly and she was abandoned, you have no business taking her in. There are plenty of rescue centres and fosterers who would take her and be able to look after her properly. She sounds utterly neglected to me. Keeping a pet means more than simply chucking some food at them once a day you know, it means paying for veterinary care when it is needed.

if this is not your dog then you should stay away from her while she is delivering her puppies because there is a chance that she will bite you not because she is in pain but because those are her babies and it is her job to protect them dogs have had puppies without any help for a long time and she will have them when she is ready and she will have them where she wants to have them they will all be okay so i suggest that you just leave her alone

Make sure no one she isn't familiar with go near her when she gives birth. Nature will take over when humans cannot. If she is familiar with you and doesn't growl when you go near her, better if you were the only for now who goes near her. Who's the wisecrack who dumped her anyway?

She will become restless, and will nest. She may begin to pant heavily.
