Praise, praise, praise.
"you sure did a good job on that spelling test yesterday!"
"Im proud of the way you handled that"
"Could you help me put these dishes away? Youre so good at it and I could use your help"
Ask them to help and let them know how much you appreciate it and how well they did. Asking for a child's participation makes them feel self-worth and proud of their accomplishments.

Give lots of praise! If they are having difficulty in an area, role play and practice with Mom/Dad or an older sibling. When they do not handle a situation well, go over what to do next time. Like handling a bully. Once a child knows how to handle things PRAISE them some more and reinforce the good stuff. Of course, let them know how much you love them and how proud you are of them, no matter what. I also have had social "events" at home with their friends. Have a pizza/movie/games night and help to make them feel excited and to be the centre of attention. Try to make your home the one where the kids want to be. I hope this helps. I am a mom of 3 and this is how I helped my super-shy fella overcome his issues.

I put my little girl in Karate, and saw a dramatic improvement in her confidence. She also takes dance classes. I let her know how proud I am of how she is doing. At school her teacher does a lot of singing with the class. She said this allows all of the kids in the class to "shine." That made a lot of sense to me. Find what your child enjoys, like a sport or other activity. Finding something you are good at can boost confidence in all areas of life. We don't all "shine" at everything, but most of us can shine at one thing.

You give the child chores and congratulate him when he succeeds and when he doesn't you encourage him.
Sports builds self-confidence.
Children learn self-confidence by trying and accomplishing.
It can be as little as picking up their toys to learning to spell a "hard" word.

I find giving my kids responsibilities in the household shows them more self worth. One is in charge of the kids bathroom, one the dinner table clearing and setting and one takes out the trash. This shows them they are an important part of the family until and appreciated as well.
